ORIGIN STORY
Plenty of seats.
Nowhere to sit.
My mother-in-law had a deck full of deep-cushioned chairs and chaises. The cushions, however, spent most of their time crammed in two huge deck boxes or stacked inside. Getting them out was a hassle. Putting them away was a hassle. So more often than not, we didn’t bother. We perched on dirty slats or discovered, too late, that the cushions were soaked.
It all seemed like a lot of infrastructure and cushion management just to sit down—so much for all that comfort. One question kept nagging at me: what if the cushions never had to leave the chair?

Simple question. The answer took six years.
The idea was simple: keep the cushions in the chair, seal out the weather, and make the whole thing easy enough to operate with one hand. Making all of that happen at once was considerably less simple.
Meet the Designer
Sean Dempsey is an industrial designer, inventor and dad drawn to clever, deliberate design. His work spans outdoor furniture, housewares and sporting goods, including Folden, the Play Date Calendar Cube for Umbra, and Slope Ropes.
Through Charlie Ray Design, Sean develops products that bring thoughtful solutions to everyday problems.
